There is one thing that all Christians seem to agree upon and it is this: “there is power in the name of Jesus” However the biggest challenge that believers have is operating in or accessing that power. Here are some questions to consider:
Has the power diminished because of the rapid increase of sin?
Is that power reserved for the “super” Christians that have worldwide ministries or sanctuaries that seat thousands?
Is there a minimum amount of time that I must be saved?
I can boldly say without reservation that the answer to all of these questions is no. You do not need an ecclesiastical title, there’s not a minimum amount of time that you need to be saved, and the increase of sin throughout the world has not diminished the power of His Name. What has diminished over time is our confidence and faith in the Name of Jesus.
The apostle John told us in his first epistle that we have one commandment from the Lord Jesus. “And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.” 1 John 3:23 (NKJV)
It may appear that there are two commands, but actually it is one command with two parts. Both parts are equal in importance, but one has a priority in sequence.
First, we must believe. The Amplified Translation of 1 John 3:23 adds clarity and insight to what it means to “believe”. And this is His order (His command, His injunction): that we should believe in (put our faith and trust in and adhere to and rely on) the name of His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah). [Emphasis added] This is where it all begins. Without confidence in the Name of Jesus Christ, we will gradually lose confidence in the Word of God. If there is a loss of confidence in the Word, then we are no better off than the world around us. Literally, ALL HOPE IS LOST.
Secondly, we must love one another. Two passages of scriptures always come to mind when love is mentioned.
- Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Colossians 3:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
- Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!… It is like the dew of Hermon coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever. Psalm 133:1,3
Love unifies every believer into the Body of Christ. When we believe on His name, we receive of power to live in His likeness. The scripture also makes it clear: The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8 (NASB)
When we come together in the powerful Name of Jesus and in unconditional love for one another, we will experience the joy, power, and miracles necessary to live the life He predestined us for.
