3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:3-4 (NKJV)
I learned many years ago, whatever comes after the word “but” changes everything said previously
Jesus didn’t deny the fact that He was hungry nor did He say that He couldn’t turn the stones into bread. However He revealed His Kingdom assignment and His focus. Often times we lose sight of our assignment by losing sight of the WORD of God. Much like in the Garden of Eden, we can lose sight of God’s Word to us and get into situations, relationships, and partnerships by not focusing on what God has already said.
Jesus spoke what was already written in the Word of God in Deuteronomy 8:3. God revealed to His people that His Word was the source of everything that they would ever need.
Satan put pressure on Jesus to meet His own needs, His own way. He placed similar pressure on Adam and Eve to meet their own need when it came to obtaining knowledge. Satan also places the same pressure on us to do things our own way. In the Gospel According to Matthew, Jesus reveals how to get every need met with this life-altering statement:
But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. Matthew 6:33 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC) [emphasis added]
You can literally live off the Word of God. God’s Word is the start point of everything. The Word of God even tells us so. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1(NKJV) If Jesus (The Word of God) didn’t take on Satan without the Word, why would attempt to do it any other way?
Satan always seeks to drive our lives and pressures us to perform, but when you know who you, what you have been called to do, and to whom you belong, you can resist him every time.
