But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. Matthew 6:33, Amplified Bible. (emphasis added)
The Kingdom of God is God’s system of operation or how He does business. As we explore seeking the Kingdom, we must endeavor to understand the protocols of the Kingdom. How you seek the Kingdom is just as important as seeking the Kingdom. A protocol is system of rules that explain the correct conduct and procedures to be followed in formal situations.
One of the most important protocols in the kingdom of God is the protocol of prayer. As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we should always desire to increase our knowledge and understanding of prayer. Prayer is the primary way we communicate with God. Let’s take a look at what the first disciples did.
1Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Luke 11:1-2 (NKJV)
The disciples asked Jesus how to pray or how to properly interact with God. Jesus, being one directly from God’s Kingdom, would have a better insight of what prayer is. Besides, the disciples had taken notice that Jesus spent considerable time in prayer and He always got results in prayer. This prayer is often called the Lord’s Prayer, I prefer to refer to it as the Model for Prayer. Let’s break down the elements of this portion of the prayer:
- So He said to them,“When you pray, say: – Prayer requires something to be said
- Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. – Honor the One with whom you are speaking to. Prayer should not be taking casually.
- Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. – My main purpose in prayer to get the will of the King done in earth, just like it’s done in heaven.
Is this how you pray? Are you continually petitioning God that His will be done? Are you an agent of the Kingdom? An agent is one who acts on behalf of another person or agency. Are you making yourself available to the Kingdom to get His will done through your life?
Remember Jesus did not come to earth with His own agenda.
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. John 5:30 (NKJV)
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38 (NKJV)
As we seek the Kingdom, let’s make sure we get understand the proper protocol.
